Personality & Traits
General Overview | By her people's standards, Kaelyn is a child and barely started what should be a long life full of wonderful experiences. And Kaelyn very much wants to be out amongst the stars, living in the moment rather than listening to the stories her mother would often tell of far of places. A scientist at heart she is inherently curious, but also cautious. She has a singular focus and is not prone to rushing into situations. Instead she prefers to observe, to base her responses on facts rather than emotions. She will always welcome company and conversation, yet those who pay attention will realise she rarely shares personal details of her own. |
|
Strengths & Weaknesses | Strengths: Determination and focus, when faced with a challenge or problem it will have her complete attention until it is solved or she is dragged from her workstation. Has an insatiable curiosity which she has turned into learning as much about the various sciences as she can but also a willingness to step outside of her comfort zone and try new things. Her somewhat unorthodox childhood means she is able to very much fend for herself, and those around her. Weakness: Though rarely willing to admit it, the years she spent in her father's 'care' left scars and so she is not prone to trusting others easily - at least not completely. She tends to keep everyone at a distance, just to varying degrees. Her stubbornness can work against her, and she does sometimes need someone to step in and say enough is enough. |
|
Ambitions | To explore and see as much as the galaxy as possible. | |
Hobbies & Interests | Music (plays piano, violin), enjoys creative arts in various forms and if working through issues can usually be found taking it out on a holodeck programme, or looking for solution at the bottom of a tub of chocolate ice cream. She is building back up to her usual fitness routine, having held records at the Academy for track & field events as well as swimming. These days she does it more to make amends for too many hours in a lab. |
Personal History | Born in 2349, Kaelyn was the only child from the brief marriage of Elran and Kyra. Both were El-Aurian refugees who had led a nomadic lifestyle ever since escaping the devastating Borg attack on their home world many years before. A contract issued by the Ferengi Alliance saw the pair cross paths by chance and a whirlwind romance ensued. The pair never stayed in one place for longer than necessary, travelling within the Federation borders and beyond as their notoriety grew in the criminal underworld. Yet deep down Kyra did long to settle down. To build a home and family. Elran's ambitions, however, were very different. His reputation was of a man willing to do whatever it took and for quickly striking down anyone who dared challenge him - often in rather creative and unexpected ways. He was elusive, yet always seemed to be in the right place at the right time. And to cross him was sign your own death warrant. That did not stop people from trying, of course. An assassination attempt a few months into Kyra's pregnancy had her questioning the future, despite her husband's assurances that he would never allow any harm to come to his family. And so she did the unforgivable, finally accepting a deal from the Federation to provide them with intelligence information in exchange for her freedom and safe travel to Earth for her and her child. Just four months after their daughter was born, Kyra discovered that her betrayal had not gone unnoticed. Quite the opposite. Elran had allowed some of his least valuable crewmembers to be arrested and even accepted the loss of one of his safehouses, all to ensure both his wife and the Federation remained confident. But when the Federation came to sieze his ship and crew, they found it stripped bare, save for his wife asleep in her bed. Fleeing aboard a new ship, Elran and his crew crossed beyond the Federation borders where he raised his daughter for the next nine years. In those years he raised a street wise, intelligent girl who could think on her feet and was undoubtedly following in her father's footsteps. More criminal than scientist, she learned quickly and her father never shielded her from the harsh realities of life outside of the Federation. Without question she was her father's daughter and she idolised him. All that abruptly changed, however, when an attack on her father's ship changed everything. Bundled into an escape pod, the last she saw of him was as he jettisoned the pod from the ship, sending the tiny craft on a course towards Federation space. The last she saw was of the ship - her home - exploding. An eternity seemed to pass before a ship detected the beacon from the pod, a patrol ship coming to her rescue. What followed was a blur of faces, questions and a long trip that took her all the way to Earth to be reunited with a mother she had never known. Kyra had rebuilt her life in the nine years separated from her daughter. Remarried, she was step-mother to two young boys and was suddenly face to face with a child she did not recognise but who was undeniably her offspring. A long difficult process followed to help Kaelyn cope with the loss of her old life, her father and the very different life she would now have on Earth. With the support of counsellors, teachers, and even Kyra's own father, they began to feel like a family and Kaelyn began to settle. With her curious nature, teachers encouraged her to ask questions, to explore and her love of science grew from that. Music too, was a subject she excelled it - something her mother grudgingly admitted she took from Elran. With a place at university on the cards, however, Kaelyn ultimately decided she wanted to follow her own path and so applied to Starfleet. After the rigorous entrance exam, she eventually was offered a place and her life as a cadet began. Yet there is no doubt many ghosts from her past still linger which Kaelyn will have to continue to work on. |
